How UK supplement rules work
Food supplements in the UK sit under food law, overseen by the Food Standards Agency, with the MHRA involved where a product is presented as a medicine. Wording about health is restricted to the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register.
For vision, the register carries authorised wording for a small set of nutrients:
| Nutrient | Authorised claim |
|---|---|
| Vitamin A | Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
| Riboflavin (B2) | Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
| Zinc | Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision |
| DHA | Contributes to the maintenance of normal vision at 250 mg daily |
Where a marine formula sits
OptiPlax is not built on those four nutrients. It is a marine formula — astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, phlorotannins and the rest of the nine — sold as daily nutritional support rather than under register wording. That is the ordinary position for marine and botanical supplements in Britain, where most botanical entries are still held on an "on hold" list from an EU-era evaluation that was never completed. It is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and not a replacement for treatment your doctor has prescribed.
Which is a long way of saying something simple: this is a food supplement, presented as one, and what you are buying is a daily marine-algae habit rather than a register claim.
Before you order: a two-minute check
The UK does not mandate iodine fortification of salt or bread, unlike Australia and New Zealand. Milk and dairy are the main dietary source here, largely incidentally through cattle feed and dairy hygiene practices, which makes British intakes more variable than in countries with mandatory fortification.
Iodine and your thyroid
Kelp powder, kelp extract, wakame and Ecklonia cava are all brown algae — the richest dietary iodine source there is — and iodine per serving is stated by the manufacturer on the pack. If you have a thyroid condition of any kind, or take levothyroxine, speak to your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Two quick notes to finish the check. The capsule shell is gelatin, so this one is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. And the routine itself is as short as it gets: one capsule a day, thirty capsules to a bottle, thirty days.
Import costs since 2021
Rules changed on 1 January 2021, and much of the advice online still predates that.
- Import VAT applies to goods arriving from outside the UK. For consignments at or below the low-value threshold it is generally charged by the seller at the point of sale.
- Customs duty may apply above the duty threshold depending on goods and origin.
- Carrier handling fees are commonly charged by Royal Mail and couriers for clearing a parcel.
The bundles are $158 USD plus $9.99 shipping for a 60-day supply, $207 USD for a 90-day supply with free shipping, or $294 USD for a 180-day supply with free shipping. Convert to sterling and add the charges above when you budget. Both larger bundles ship free, which is why most UK readers go straight to the 90-day or 180-day option — one clearance, one handling fee, and then nothing to think about for three or six months. Current thresholds are on GOV.UK.
Your eye test, and your daily capsule
Free NHS sight tests are available in England to specific groups — people over 60, under 16, those with diabetes or glaucoma, and several others. In Scotland, NHS eye examinations are free for all residents. Wales and Northern Ireland have their own arrangements.
Book the test and take the capsule: they do different jobs. An eye examination identifies what is behind any change you have noticed, and diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma are both symptomless in their early, treatable stages, which is exactly why the tests exist. OptiPlax is the daily marine routine that runs alongside that — a dietary supplement, not a replacement for the exam or for anything your doctor has prescribed.
Sudden vision loss, a curtain across your vision, a shower of new floaters or flashes, eye pain with redness, or sudden double vision need same-day attention rather than a supplement.
Important
