ProstaDefend in Australia: TGA Context and Personal Importation

Australia regulates supplements more tightly than most English-speaking countries, which changes the picture for anyone ordering from overseas. This guide covers the TGA framework, what personal importation actually permits, and what is in the formula.

Australia regulates this category differently

In Australia, supplements are classified as complementary medicines and regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration. This is a genuinely stricter framework than the American one, and closer in spirit to Canada’s.

Complementary medicines supplied in Australia must be included in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods, and carry an AUST L or AUST R number on the label:

MarkingWhat it signifies
AUST LListed medicine. Lower-risk. Ingredients must come from a TGA-permitted list, and the sponsor certifies compliance. Not individually evaluated for efficacy.
AUST L(A)Assessed listed medicine. TGA has assessed the efficacy evidence for specified claims.
AUST RRegistered medicine. Higher-risk products, individually evaluated for quality, safety and efficacy.

The permitted-ingredients list is the important part. The TGA maintains a specified list of substances that may be used in listed medicines, along with required warning statements for certain ingredients. A botanical that is freely sold in the United States is not automatically permitted in an Australian listed medicine.

You can search the register yourself through the TGA’s ARTG search.

Personal importation — what the rules actually say

ProstaDefend is ordered from an overseas seller rather than bought in an Australian pharmacy or health shop, which puts it under the personal importation arrangements rather than the domestic supply rules.

In broad terms, the Personal Importation Scheme allows an individual to import a therapeutic good for their own use or for an immediate family member, subject to conditions — quantity limits, the goods not being for commercial resale, and the substance not being prohibited or requiring a permit.

Check before you order, not after

Rules on quantities, prohibited substances and permit requirements are set by the TGA and the Australian Border Force, and they change. Read the current conditions on the TGA Personal Importation Scheme page before ordering. This site is not in a position to advise you on your individual circumstances, and a general guide is no substitute for the current rules.

Two practical points that follow. First, a product imported personally has not been through TGA evaluation, so the assurance an AUST L number represents does not apply to it. Second, Australia’s biosecurity rules are strict, and plant-derived goods attract attention at the border — declaring accurately is the sensible course.

The formula

Six botanicals, two capsules daily with food, 60 capsules per bottle:

Australian readers should note that some botanicals carry mandatory warning statements when used in listed medicines domestically. Our soursop and cat’s claw guides set out the specific safety considerations for those two in detail, and they are worth reading before ordering rather than after.

Ordering, pricing and delivery

The order page handles pricing, payment and shipping. Points specific to Australian buyers:

  • Pricing is in USD. Your card issuer converts at its rate and may add an international transaction fee. The reference offer we have seen is 6 bottles for approximately $294 USD.
  • GST and duties. Australia applies GST to imported goods, generally collected at the point of sale for low-value consignments. Check what the checkout total includes.
  • Delivery times to Australia are longer than to North America, and longer again outside the eastern seaboard.
  • Declare accurately on any customs documentation.

Before ordering, it is worth speaking to a pharmacist — Australian community pharmacies are well set up for medicines advice, and complementary medicine interactions are within their scope.

What buyers say about ProstaDefend

★★★★★

Two capsules with breakfast and that is the whole routine. Easy to keep to, and the bottle lasts the full month exactly as stated.
Gordon M. — Victoria, BC

★★★★★

Ordering was simple and the box arrived in five days, packed plainly. Good to see the serving size printed clearly on the label.
Ray T. — Hamilton, ON

★★★★☆

Capsules are a normal size and go down easily. I appreciate that the six botanicals are all named on the bottle rather than hidden in a blend.

Frequently asked questions

Does ProstaDefend have an AUST L number?
A product ordered from an overseas seller under personal importation has not been through TGA evaluation and would not carry an AUST L number. That marking applies to complementary medicines supplied within Australia. You can search the ARTG yourself for any product.
Is it legal to import supplements into Australia?
The Personal Importation Scheme permits importing therapeutic goods for personal use subject to conditions, including quantity limits and the substance not being prohibited. Rules change, so read the current TGA conditions before ordering.
Will I pay GST on an imported supplement?
Australia applies GST to imported goods, generally collected at the point of sale for low-value consignments. Check what the checkout total includes before completing an order.
How does Australian regulation compare with the US?
Considerably stricter. Australian listed medicines must use ingredients from a TGA-permitted list and carry an AUST L or AUST R number, whereas US supplements require no pre-market review at all under DSHEA.
Can it treat prostate problems?
No. It is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and cannot be presented as a treatment for any condition. Urinary symptoms should be assessed by a GP, who can identify what is actually causing them.
