Why these guides read the way they do
We describe what a plant is, how it is traditionally used, what research has looked at and the practical safety notes — the things worth knowing before a bottle arrives. Our editorial policy explains the standard in more detail.
Five things worth knowing before you read any of them
1. The plant part changes everything
Root and leaf from the same species are frequently used for entirely different purposes, with different constituents and different research behind them. Stinging nettle is the clearest case: root goes into men’s formulas, leaf goes into teas and seasonal products, and a label saying only “stinging nettle 300 mg” does not tell you which you are holding. Leaf is cheaper to produce, which creates an obvious incentive.
2. Extract is not the same as powder
Clinical research almost always uses standardised extracts, not milled whole plant. A saw palmetto product listing “500 mg” of berry powder supplies far less of the studied fraction than one listing 320 mg of extract standardised to 85% fatty acids. The larger number on the front of the bottle can easily be the weaker product.
3. Absorption is often the real story
Some compounds are barely absorbed when swallowed. Curcumin and berberine are both in this category, and essentially every commercial product built on them is an attempt to work around it — with piperine, with phospholipid complexes, or simply by splitting the dose across the day. A milligram figure means little without knowing whether any of it reaches your bloodstream.
4. “Natural” says nothing about interactions
Several botanicals here have genuine, documented interactions with prescription medicines. Cat’s claw affects liver enzymes that metabolise a large share of prescription drugs. Berberine can add to the glucose-lowering effect of diabetes medication. Green tea extract carries a liver warning in several jurisdictions that brewed tea does not. If you take anything regularly, a pharmacist check is free in most Canadian pharmacies and takes five minutes.
5. Seaweed ingredients bring iodine with them
Three of the marine ingredients here — kelp, wakame and Ecklonia cava — are brown seaweeds, the richest dietary iodine source there is — which is a large part of why they are used. Iodine per serving is stated by the manufacturer on the pack. If you have any thyroid condition or take thyroid medication, check it with your doctor before starting a seaweed product.
How to read these twenty-two guides
Each of the twenty-two sits at a different point on the same map. Ginger has reasonably consistent research behind one specific use. Saw palmetto has the longest traditional record of any men’s botanical and a large trial literature to read through. Others are newer arrivals where laboratory work describes a mechanism and human research is still building. The guides tell you which is which, so you can weigh a formula on what is actually in it.
Each guide says which of those situations applies, and links to the sources so you can check. That is the whole point of writing them independently of any product.
