OptiPlax in Ireland: The Marine Formula, and What You Pay
OptiPlax is a marine-algae capsule — nine sea-sourced components in one 500 mg blend, taken once a day. Ireland applies EU supplement rules and EU customs rules, so this page covers both: how the product is sold here, and what a bundle costs delivered.

How Irish and EU supplement rules work
Food supplements in Ireland are overseen by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland with HSE environmental health officers, under EU food law. The HPRA steps in where a product is presented as a medicine.
Health claims are governed by Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006, which permits only wording on the EU authorised list. For vision the authorised nutrients are the same short set across the bloc: vitamin A, riboflavin, zinc and DHA at 250 mg daily, each with wording about maintaining normal vision.
OptiPlax is not built on those nutrients. It is a marine formula — astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, phlorotannins and the rest of the nine — sold as daily nutritional support rather than under authorised wording, which is the ordinary position for marine and botanical supplements across the EU, where most botanical entries remain "on hold" from an evaluation that was never completed. It is a dietary supplement, not a medicine, and not a replacement for treatment your doctor has prescribed.
The FSAI also operates a notification system for businesses placing supplements on the Irish market. Ordering direct from the maker is a personal import rather than a domestic placement, so it runs on the customs route set out further down this page.
Before you order: a two-minute check
Iodine and your thyroid
Kelp powder, kelp extract, wakame and Ecklonia cava are all brown algae — the richest dietary iodine source there is — and iodine per serving is stated by the manufacturer on the pack. If you have a thyroid condition, thyroid nodules, or take thyroid medication, speak to your GP before you start.
Ireland has no mandatory iodine fortification; dairy is the main dietary source, as in the UK. Irish intakes have generally been adequate, helped by high dairy consumption, though they vary seasonally with cattle feeding practices — so read the pack figure against your own diet and you have that covered.
One more label note while you are here: the capsule shell is gelatin, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans. After that, the routine is a single capsule a day — thirty capsules, thirty days.
VAT and customs on a US order
Since July 2021 the EU removed the VAT exemption for low-value consignments, so every commercial import attracts VAT regardless of value.
| Charge | Applies |
|---|---|
| Irish VAT | On all consignments — collected by the seller at checkout under the Import One-Stop Shop, or on delivery |
| Customs duty | Above the duty threshold, depending on classification and origin |
| An Post / courier fee | Commonly charged for customs clearance |
So budget above the order-page figure: a $158 USD bundle for 60 days, $207 for 90 days or $294 for 180 days arrives with Irish VAT and usually a handling fee added. Revenue publishes current thresholds and rates. Both larger bundles ship free, and one clearance covering three or six months is the reason most Irish readers choose them.
The formula, and your eye care alongside it
One capsule daily, thirty capsules per bottle, a 500 mg blend of kelp (powder and 10% fucoxanthin extract), wakame, astaxanthin, chlorella, Ecklonia cava, nori yaki, spirulina and sea buckthorn oil.
Astaxanthin is the one most readers recognise — the deep-red carotenoid from Haematococcus pluvialis that colours salmon and shrimp. Alongside it sit fucoxanthin from the kelp extract, phlorotannins from Ecklonia cava and the omega-7 fatty acids of sea buckthorn oil. Nine marine components, one capsule, thirty days per bottle, with per-ingredient amounts stated by the manufacturer on the pack.
See an optometrist for these
Sudden vision loss, a curtain across your vision, a shower of new floaters or flashes, painful red eye with halos, or sudden double vision need same-day attention. For gradual change, book a routine eye exam — and if you have diabetes, Diabetic RetinaScreen offers free retinal screening in Ireland, which detects a condition that is symptomless in its most treatable stages.

Ordering was straightforward and it arrived quicker than I expected. The marine-algae angle is what made it interesting to me.
