How supplements are regulated in Canada

Canada regulates products like this as natural health products under the Natural Health Products Regulations, administered by Health Canada. This is a meaningfully different framework from the one in the United States, and it is worth understanding before you compare products.

A natural health product sold legally in Canada must hold a product licence and display either an NPN (Natural Product Number) or a DIN-HM (Homeopathic Medicine Number) on the label. To obtain one, the manufacturer submits evidence supporting the product’s safety, quality and the specific claims it intends to make. Health Canada reviews that submission before the product may be sold domestically.

Two consequences follow for you as a buyer:

  • A licensed product in Canada may only make claims that were reviewed and accepted. This is why Canadian labelling tends to be more conservatively worded than American labelling for the same ingredient.
  • Products shipped to Canada by an international seller for personal use do not necessarily carry an NPN, because the licensing requirement attaches to sale within Canada. That is not automatically a problem, but it does mean the Health Canada review has not happened for that specific product.

You can check whether any product holds a licence using Health Canada’s Licensed Natural Health Products Database. It is a free public search and takes about a minute.

What is in the formula

ProstaDefend combines six botanicals. Rather than repeat marketing copy, here is what each one actually is, with a link to our full guide covering its traditional use, the research and the safety notes.

IngredientBotanical namePart used
Saw PalmettoSerenoa repensRipe berries
Pygeum AfricanumPrunus africanaBark
Red RaspberryRubus idaeusFruit
SoursopAnnona muricataFruit
Cat’s ClawUncaria tomentosaInner bark
Stinging NettleUrtica dioicaRoot

The first three of those — saw palmetto, pygeum and nettle root — are the long-standing European grouping used in men’s preparations since the middle of the last century. The other three are supporting botanicals contributing polyphenols and traditional-use history.

Directions are two capsules daily with food. A bottle contains 60 capsules, which works out to a 30-day supply at that rate.

Ordering from Canada

ProstaDefend is not stocked by Canadian pharmacy chains and is not sold through this website. It is ordered from the seller’s own order page, which handles pricing, bundle options, payment and delivery.

Practical points specific to ordering from Canada:

  • Pricing is in US dollars. Your card issuer converts at its own rate and may add a foreign transaction fee, typically a small percentage. Check what your card charges before assuming the total.
  • Delivery times to Canada vary by province and are longer for northern and remote communities than for the Windsor–Quebec corridor. The order page states current estimates.
  • Customs. Personal-use shipments of dietary supplements to Canada are generally permitted within reasonable quantities, but the Canada Border Services Agency may apply duties or taxes depending on declared value. The CBSA publishes current thresholds.
  • Keep the paperwork. Order confirmation, tracking and receipt — useful for both returns and any customs query.

The reference offer we have seen quoted is 6 bottles for approximately $294 USD. Treat that as a reference point rather than a fixed price: sellers change pricing and bundle structures, and the order page shows what applies at the moment you look.

Who might be interested — and who should not order

The product is aimed at adult men who want a daily botanical supplement as part of a broader routine. That is a modest proposition, and it should be read as one.

Do not order if any of these apply

  • You take anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication
  • You take immunosuppressant medication or have an autoimmune condition (see our cat’s claw guide)
  • You have a neurological condition or family history of Parkinson’s disease (see our soursop guide)
  • You have surgery scheduled within the next two weeks
  • You have blood in the urine, fever with pelvic pain, or cannot urinate — these need a doctor now, not a supplement

If you take any regular prescription medication, a five-minute conversation with your pharmacist is free in most Canadian pharmacies and worth having first.

Also: tell your doctor you are taking it before any PSA test. Several ingredients in men’s formulas have been discussed in relation to PSA readings, and your result should be interpreted with that information.

What buyers say about ProstaDefend

★★★★★

Two capsules with breakfast and that is the whole routine. Easy to keep to, and the bottle lasts the full month exactly as stated.
Gordon M. — Victoria, BC

★★★★★

Ordering was simple and the box arrived in five days, packed plainly. Good to see the serving size printed clearly on the label.
Ray T. — Hamilton, ON

★★★★☆

Capsules are a normal size and go down easily. I appreciate that the six botanicals are all named on the bottle rather than hidden in a blend.

Personal-use shipments of supplements are generally permitted within reasonable quantities, but CBSA may apply duties or taxes depending on declared value. Current thresholds are published on the CBSA website.
