How supplements are regulated in Canada
Canada regulates products like this as natural health products under the Natural Health Products Regulations, administered by Health Canada. This is a meaningfully different framework from the one in the United States, and it is worth understanding before you compare products.
A natural health product sold legally in Canada must hold a product licence and display either an NPN (Natural Product Number) or a DIN-HM (Homeopathic Medicine Number) on the label. To obtain one, the manufacturer submits evidence supporting the product’s safety, quality and the specific claims it intends to make. Health Canada reviews that submission before the product may be sold domestically.
Two consequences follow for you as a buyer:
- A licensed product in Canada may only make claims that were reviewed and accepted. This is why Canadian labelling tends to be more conservatively worded than American labelling for the same ingredient.
- Products shipped to Canada by an international seller for personal use do not necessarily carry an NPN, because the licensing requirement attaches to sale within Canada. That is not automatically a problem, but it does mean the Health Canada review has not happened for that specific product.

The first three of those — saw palmetto, pygeum and nettle root — are the long-standing European grouping used in men’s preparations since the middle of the last century. The other three are supporting botanicals contributing polyphenols and traditional-use history.
