ProstaDefend in the United Kingdom: Rules, Costs and Formula

The UK treats most supplements as foods rather than medicines, which shapes both what a seller may claim and what happens when a parcel crosses the border. Both changed after 2021, and both are worth understanding before ordering.

Food supplement, not medicine

In the UK, products like ProstaDefend fall under food supplement law rather than medicines law. The Food Standards Agency oversees the category, while the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency steps in if a product crosses the line into being presented as a medicine.

That boundary is the crux of it. A product presented as treating, preventing or curing a disease is, by legal definition, a medicine, and sits under a different licensing regime entirely. This is why UK supplement labelling is carefully worded, and why claims are constrained.

Health claims on food supplements in the UK are further restricted to those on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. Notably, most botanical health claims remain "on hold" — carried over from the EU process that never finished evaluating them. In practice that means a UK seller cannot make a specific health claim for saw palmetto or nettle root, because no authorised claim exists.

There is also a separate Traditional Herbal Registration scheme run by the MHRA, under which a herbal product can carry a THR number and make limited traditional-use claims. THR products display a distinctive logo. A food supplement is not the same thing.

What changed for imports after 2021

Anyone ordering supplements from outside the UK should know that the rules changed substantially on 1 January 2021, and a lot of older advice online is out of date.

What appliesDetail
Import VATApplies to goods arriving from outside the UK. For consignments at or below the low-value threshold, VAT is generally charged at the point of sale by the seller.
Customs dutyMay apply above the duty threshold, depending on the goods and their origin.
Carrier handling feeRoyal Mail and courier services commonly charge a handling fee for clearing a parcel — often the unwelcome surprise on the doorstep.

The practical effect is that the price on the order page may not be the total you end up paying. Current thresholds and rules are on GOV.UK, and it is worth a look before ordering a multi-bottle bundle.

Saw palmetto, pygeum and nettle root are long established in European men’s preparations — the grouping British buyers will recognise from pharmacy shelves. Our individual guides cover each plant, its traditional use and its research record.

Ordering, and speaking to a pharmacist first

ProstaDefend is not sold through this website and is not stocked by UK high-street pharmacies. It is ordered from the seller’s order page, priced in US dollars. The reference offer we have seen quoted is 6 bottles for approximately $294 USD, before any import VAT or handling charges.

One genuinely useful UK-specific point: community pharmacists are freely accessible without an appointment, and checking a supplement against your current medicines is exactly the kind of question they handle. Given that this formula contains cat’s claw — which affects liver enzymes involved in metabolising many prescription drugs — that conversation is worth having.

See a GP rather than ordering a supplement if

You have blood in your urine, cannot pass urine, have a fever alongside pelvic or back pain, or have noticed a sudden change in urinary function. NHS 111 can advise on urgency if you are unsure.

What buyers say about ProstaDefend

★★★★★

Two capsules with breakfast and that is the whole routine. Easy to keep to, and the bottle lasts the full month exactly as stated.
Gordon M. — Victoria, BC

★★★★★

Ordering was simple and the box arrived in five days, packed plainly. Good to see the serving size printed clearly on the label.
Ray T. — Hamilton, ON

★★★★☆

Capsules are a normal size and go down easily. I appreciate that the six botanicals are all named on the bottle rather than hidden in a blend.

Frequently asked questions

Is ProstaDefend regulated as a medicine in the UK?
No. Products of this type fall under food supplement law, overseen by the Food Standards Agency. A product presented as treating or curing a disease would legally be a medicine and would require MHRA authorisation.
Will I pay import VAT on a supplement order?
Yes, import VAT applies to goods arriving from outside the UK, and for low-value consignments it is generally charged by the seller at the point of sale. Carriers may also add a handling fee, and customs duty can apply above the duty threshold.
What is a THR number?
A Traditional Herbal Registration, issued by the MHRA, allows a herbal product to make limited traditional-use claims and display the THR logo. It is a different scheme from food supplement regulation, and a food supplement will not carry one.
Why do UK supplement labels say so little?
Health claims are restricted to those on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register, and most botanical claims remain "on hold" from the unfinished EU evaluation process. In practice, sellers cannot make specific health claims for most botanicals.
Should I speak to a pharmacist before taking it?
If you take any regular medication, yes. UK community pharmacists are accessible without an appointment, and this formula includes ingredients with documented interaction potential — cat’s claw in particular affects enzymes that metabolise many prescription drugs.
