Food supplement, not medicine
In the UK, products like ProstaDefend fall under food supplement law rather than medicines law. The Food Standards Agency oversees the category, while the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency steps in if a product crosses the line into being presented as a medicine.
That boundary is the crux of it. A product presented as treating, preventing or curing a disease is, by legal definition, a medicine, and sits under a different licensing regime entirely. This is why UK supplement labelling is carefully worded, and why claims are constrained.
Health claims on food supplements in the UK are further restricted to those on the GB Nutrition and Health Claims Register. Notably, most botanical health claims remain "on hold" — carried over from the EU process that never finished evaluating them. In practice that means a UK seller cannot make a specific health claim for saw palmetto or nettle root, because no authorised claim exists.
There is also a separate Traditional Herbal Registration scheme run by the MHRA, under which a herbal product can carry a THR number and make limited traditional-use claims. THR products display a distinctive logo. A food supplement is not the same thing.
What changed for imports after 2021
Anyone ordering supplements from outside the UK should know that the rules changed substantially on 1 January 2021, and a lot of older advice online is out of date.
