OptiPlax in New Zealand: The Formula, the Rules and the Order

New Zealand had a genuine iodine deficiency problem. Soils are naturally low in iodine, and by the early 2000s deficiency had re-emerged in children after decades of improvement. Through Food Standards Australia New Zealand, mandatory iodised salt in most commercially produced bread was introduced in 2009, and iodine status improved.

How supplements are regulated here

The formula

One capsule daily, thirty per bottle, a 500 mg proprietary blend of nine components: kelp powder and kelp extract standardised to 10% fucoxanthin, wakame extract, astaxanthin 2% from Haematococcus pluvialis, chlorella powder, Ecklonia cava extract, nori yaki powder, spirulina powder and sea buckthorn oil.

Astaxanthin is the ingredient most readers recognise: the deep-red carotenoid from Haematococcus pluvialis that gives salmon and shrimp their colour. Alongside it sit fucoxanthin from the kelp extract, phlorotannins from Ecklonia cava, the omega-7 fatty acids of sea buckthorn oil, and the green microalgae — chlorella and spirulina — that people have taken as whole foods for decades. It is a spread of marine compounds you will not find together in a vitamin tablet.

Per-ingredient amounts within the 500 mg blend are stated by the manufacturer on the pack. One label detail to note before you order: the capsule shell is gelatin, so it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
