How the TGA system works

In Australia supplements are complementary medicines regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, and must be on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods with an AUST L or AUST R number to be supplied domestically.

Two features of that system matter especially for weight products.

The permitted ingredients list. Listed medicines may only contain substances the TGA has approved for that use, at approved concentrations, with any required warning statements. A botanical freely sold in the US is not automatically permitted in an Australian listed medicine.

The permitted indications list. Since 2018, listed medicines draw their claims from a fixed TGA list of permitted indications. The weight-related entries on that list are specific and generally framed around diet and exercise, so claims come from the list rather than from the sponsor. It is a tidy system, and it explains why Australian labels read the way they do.

The TGA also publishes its safety advisories openly and the register of listed medicines is searchable, so anything you want to look up before ordering from overseas takes a minute and costs nothing.

Personal importation: how ordering from overseas works

Ordering from an overseas seller puts this under the Personal Importation Scheme rather than domestic supply rules.

Broadly, that scheme allows an individual to import a therapeutic good for their own use or an immediate family member’s, subject to quantity limits, the goods not being for resale, and the substance not being prohibited or requiring a permit.

The practical consequence is simply that a personally imported product comes to you through that scheme rather than the domestic listing pathway, so it will not carry an AUST L number — that is the nature of the route, and it is the same for anything Australians order from abroad.
