Phosphatidylserine: The Fat Your Brain Cells Are Made Of
Unlike most ingredients sold for memory, phosphatidylserine is not a plant extract or a botanical — it is a structural component already present in every cell membrane in the body, at its highest concentration in the brain. That distinction shapes both its plausibility and its research record.

What it actually is
Phosphatidylserine (often abbreviated PS) is a phospholipid — a type of fat molecule that forms part of the structure of cell membranes throughout the body, with the highest concentration found in brain tissue. It is not an herb or a botanical extract; it is a compound the body already makes and uses structurally.
Early supplement research in the 1990s used phosphatidylserine derived from bovine (cow) brain cortex. Following concerns about transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (the disease family that includes BSE), that source was discontinued, and virtually all phosphatidylserine sold today is derived from soy or sunflower lecithin instead — a meaningful sourcing change worth knowing, since some of the earlier research used the discontinued bovine form.
It is most commonly sold as a standalone softgel or capsule, since the effective daily amount used in trials is too large to fit comfortably into a shared multi-ingredient formula alongside several other actives.
What the newer trials show
Phosphatidylserine is proposed to support membrane fluidity and function in neurons, which affects how efficiently cells communicate with each other. Because it is already a normal structural component rather than a foreign compound, the biological rationale is more direct than for most botanical actives.
Trials using the modern soy-derived form have focused mainly on older adults reporting age-associated memory complaints — not younger adults seeking a general cognitive boost. Several placebo-controlled trials in this population have reported improvements on measures of memory and learning after ongoing use, generally at daily doses in the 100–300 mg range over periods of eight to twelve weeks. The trial base is smaller than for Ginkgo but the direction of the newer evidence has been fairly consistent.
An older and separate research thread examined phosphatidylserine in people with diagnosed dementia, with some early positive findings — but that work mostly used the discontinued bovine-derived form, and modern soy-derived phosphatidylserine has not been separately tested in that population to nearly the same degree. The two research threads should not be conflated: the newer, more directly relevant evidence concerns age-associated memory complaints in otherwise healthy older adults, not dementia treatment as such.
Safety and sourcing
What to check before taking it
- Soy allergy. Most commercial phosphatidylserine is soy-derived unless the label specifies sunflower-sourced. Check the source if you have a soy allergy.
- Anticoagulant medication. A theoretical interaction has been raised in some sources at high doses; worth mentioning to a pharmacist if you take blood thinners.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Adequate safety data does not exist; avoid.
Reported side effects in trials have been mild and infrequent overall — occasional insomnia when taken late in the day, and mild digestive upset. The research is searchable on PubMed.
